The Scientific Research Organisation of Samoa (SROS) was established in 2006 by the Government of Samoa, to promote innovative visions of SROS scientists and the drive from the private sector, to lead to optimal utilization of locally available resources for the betterment of the people of Samoa.
SROS works to implement and support the Government’s strategy for the Development of Samoa by providing the research, training, and analysis required for competitive research, and market opportunities and to provide a foundation for scientific research in Samoa.
Project Objectives
In Samoa, the following project activities work towards increasing domestic citrus production in support of pro-health outcomes and wider community development impacts:
Objective 1. To create viable citrus value chains
Establish on-farm trials to evaluate and identify citrus cultivars that can extend consumer supply
Undertake participatory postharvest handling trials
Enhance local knowledge and capacity in tree fruit production and postharvest handling.
Objective 2: Enhancing the resilience of fruit production systems.
Establish on-farm trials to evaluate options to enhance orchard resilience to potential future cyclone damage.
Pest and disease remediation awareness.
Objective 3: New household enterprises to enhance industry sustainability.
New income-generating opportunities aligned with existing citrus value chains
Objective 4: Translating citrus value chains into human nutrition impacts.
Food choice, dietary intake and consumer purchasing behaviour with the capacity to support or hinder increased fruit consumption.
